ESFERAS CULTURALES
Esferas Culturales are spaces designed for artistic development and cultural integration in the state of Nuevo León. Its mission relies on access to artistic workshops, plays, and cultural events for the communities of the periphery of the metropolitan area of Monterrey, from children to elder adults; in addition to providing a public space for multiple uses.
For this project, we collaborated on designing furniture and spaces together with Covachita, an architecture firm. The design strategy consists of a furniture program that encourages the configuration of spaces so that they are flexible for many different dynamics. At the same time, they respond to the pedagogical program created especially for these cultural centers, which seeks to promote human and social development processes through artistic and cultural expressions.
In Esferas Culturales there will be courses focused on art for children of young ages (from 0 to 3 years old), to elder adults. The building has three spaces open for free transit, with a plaza, an esplanade, and interior spaces where there are workshops, a recording studio, theater, and a library. We designed pieces of furniture for each of these spaces and their activities, generating a connection between the structural and material elements, making a clear reference to the Monterrey Fundidora and the identity of CONARTE.
A key part of the development of our concept was the combination of play, art, and memorable interactions between people. The main piece works like an island that allows people to appreciate the entire library space with a 360 view, motivating children to experience a sense of culture. This works as a system within the space, which provides niches with some privacy for activities that require concentration and at the same time seats outside for group moments. The islands can be crossed and sorted according to the needs of the dynamics raised, inviting people to interact with them constantly while configuring their own system of work, study, or rest.
The first 3 Cultural Spheres are found in El Carmen, Galeana and García, with the projection of 3 more Spheres in other municipalities of the state of Nuevo León.
